Not too long ago, tattoos were mostly associated with sailors, bikers and sideshow artists. But today they are gradually becoming a popular form of art and the people who get them are as diverse as the styles and designs they choose. Tribal tattoos are bold, silhouette style designs. Using this style traditional tribal designs are made. These are self contained, abstract and without shading. Tattoos made using this style can be classified as those which have a specific meaning and those which do not have any meaning. Realistic styles are used to make tattoos which portray scenes from nature or portraits. Celtic style refers to tattoo work based on Celtic art and design.

Cross, circle and other interweaving motif designs are popular under this style. Oriental style refers to the approach rather that t he design. Swirling patterns and figures from eastern mythology are incorporated into the designs. Individuals in traditional Japanese dress are immensely popular designs. Custom made designs are also gaining popularity these days. Original work may be created by the bearer, his friends or with help from the tattooist. Based on the taste, budget, color sense and attitude of the bearer, the design can widely vary.

In few groups or religions, tattoo is an integral part and each person belonging to the group or following the religion is required to have a specific tattoo mark on their body symbolizing the person's authority as a group member.
